Stone Soup and Shady Streets: A Personal Conversation About Fairfax’s Future

A neighborhood interview about my campaign, our community, and what we can accomplish together

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I wanted to share a special interview about my campaign for Mayor, conducted right here in my own neighborhood at the beautiful Country Club Hills Commons Pavilion, alongside our natural forest and stream.

My hope is that this interview will give residents and voters an opportunity to get to know me a little better — not just as a candidate or City Council member, but as a neighbor, in a relaxed and personal conversation about our community and its future.

Shortly after our Labor Day campaign kickoff, Annette Schmitz, co-founder and host of The County Edit, joined me for a spontaneous conversation she titled “Stone Soup and Shady Streets: The Climate Strategist Running for Fairfax City Mayor.”

We talked about why I'm running, my experience in public service, the challenges and opportunities facing Fairfax, and my commitment to protecting our trees, natural environment, and quality of life through thoughtful, balanced growth.

One especially enjoyable topic was our Labor Day community celebration, where neighbors volunteered their artistic talents and we turned Old Town Fairfax into a stage for three local dance groups! It was a wonderful celebration of our city's beauty, charm, and community spirit — and inspired my idea for a future Mayor's Neighborhood Dance Festival, bringing together talent from across Fairfax.

Perhaps most importantly, we discussed how the Mayor can help bring residents, neighborhoods, businesses, and city government together to accomplish more than any could alone. My professional experience and commitment to Fairfax have convinced me that bringing people together to achieve common goals is one of the most important roles of the Mayor.
